Dr. Robert Stephens (1924-2013) had a long career in international education, particularly in relation to East and Southern Africa. He served in the Foreign Service as Cultural Affairs Officer in Nairobi, Kenya; in the State Department as Chief of Eastern and Southern Africa in the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs; as Assistant Director of the African Studies Program at Syracuse University; and as Associate Director for International Development at Tufts University. His book, Kenyan Student Airlifts to America 1959-1961; An Educational Odyssey, documents the experiences of the hundreds of African students who came to American universities on three “Airlifts” at a time when little education was available for Africans under the British. The book contains many heart-warming stories about their time in the United States, and about their successful careers when they returned to Kenya.
